- Cloud computing is opening up supercomputing to smaller players, beyond government agencies and large corporations. A drug-discovery simulation, testing 21 million compounds in less than three hours, announced on Thursday, is proof of the trend. The cost of computing, done on a 50,000-core cluster in several Amazon Web Services data centers, was less than $4,900 an hour.
